A couple of days ago I shared my story of being a conservation volunteer on D’Urville Island and how much I gained from it.

I thought it might be useful to share my survival tips in case you are thinking of becoming a volunteer:

  1. Kaikuia grass is tough enough to break spades.

    Work life balance

Working boots having a day off

  2. No matter how much thought you put into the grocery list, someone will always be unhappy. Focus on the happy people.
  3. Food becomes fascinating when there is a limited amount of it.
  4. Planting is more satisfying than releasing/weeding.
  5. The laughter of happy kids is the best sound in the world.
  6. We are all weird in our own way and should embrace our inner weirdo.
  7. The tap root of a cabbage tree is 1000 times sweeter than sugar.
  8. You can wear the same clothes 3 days in a row and no one will care.
  9. Biscuits at morning tea always make people smile.
  10. A good pair of shoes is essential.
