A couple of days ago I shared my story of being a conservation volunteer on D’Urville Island and how much I gained from it.
I thought it might be useful to share my survival tips in case you are thinking of becoming a volunteer:
-
Kaikuia grass is tough enough to break spades.
Working boots having a day off
-
No matter how much thought you put into the grocery list, someone will always be unhappy. Focus on the happy people.
-
Food becomes fascinating when there is a limited amount of it.
-
Planting is more satisfying than releasing/weeding.
-
The laughter of happy kids is the best sound in the world.
-
We are all weird in our own way and should embrace our inner weirdo.
-
The tap root of a cabbage tree is 1000 times sweeter than sugar.
-
You can wear the same clothes 3 days in a row and no one will care.
-
Biscuits at morning tea always make people smile.
-
A good pair of shoes is essential.
Do you have any other survival tips?
