A friend wished me a remarkable year for 2014. I thought this was a fantastic thing to say to someone. Her comment got me thinking of what I want 2014 to look like and what I can achieve in the rest of this year to pave the way for 2014.
It seems that we all get so distracted by Christmas that we put everything else on hold. This year I’ve simplified Christmas to give myself more time. That’s right I’ve already done my Christmas shopping!
The following are things I will do to set a great foundation for a remarkable 2014 (with plenty of festive fun in there too):
- Spring clean stuff I’m an anti-stuff kind of gal and yet so far I’ve managed to collect 2 bags of clothes, 1 bag of linen and an ovenware set that I got for my 21st (I’ve only used it once or twice a year since then) for taking to the charity shop. Minimising my “stuff” will pave the way for ease of movement as 2014 will involve travel of some description as well as a wardrobe of clothes where I love each piece and look fantastic in them all!
- Spring clean online I’m going to unsubscribe from the majority of the lists I’m on. I have folders called Career Change and Inspiration and there are about 200 odd unread emails in there. We all know I’ve never going to read all those. The same goes for my favourite websites that I’ve save. I need to do some heavy deleting and organising. My aim is to apply the 80:20 rule – in this case it means that I get 80% of my benefit from only 20% of the lists I subscribe to so I need to unsubscribe from 80% of them (Yikes!!). This will lighten my on line world and ensure that I’m focusing on the emails/people that will give me the best chance of succeeding.
- Get ready to sell I have an investment apartment that I want sell. I realised a few months ago that it’s time to sell so I’ve been getting the tradesmen in to get it up to scratch. Once I sell this will help my ease of movement next year plus there will be a reduction of stress in managing a property in a different city.
- Finish POOA. Finish your what??!! POOA is short for Practice On Own Account which means that if I want I will no longer need to be an employee to practice the law if I still want to practice that is. To finish my POOA I need to do a whole bunch of administrative things. Once the process is complete this will pave the way to having more flexibility in how I work.
- Buy new laptop I’ve had my current laptop for about 8 years and in computer years I figure this makes it about 80. It’s very slow. Writing a status update on Facebook regularly causes it to freezes up on me. This purchase will give me a great tool to use to write/process photos/set up an online business.
- Get finances up to date I usually good with managing my money but I know I can simplify things so I’m updating my balance sheet and closing down bank accounts I no longer need.
- Run and dance I’m going to run a 16km off road race (my longest ever) on Saturday and dance in our Christmas salsa performance a week late. These events are paving the way to improving my confidence and proving to me that with a bit of discipline and bravery you can achieve what you previously thought was impossible.
There are 4 weeks of 2013 left. What are you going to do to make your 2014 remarkable?
A little update on where I got to with finishing 2013 off with a bang:
Spring clean stuff – 4 bags of clothes and general “stuff”, 1 bag of linen and an ovenware set that I got for my 21st all gone to the charity shop to make someone else happier. I feel much lighter.
Spring clean online – I was subscribed to 30 lists. I’ve unsubscribed from 11. I’ve not started working on organising my favourites. I think I might go with the drastic steps of just deleting the lot!
Get ready to sell – fully repainted and new flooring laid, lawyer hired and real estate agent ready to go. Marketing will start the second week of January!
Finish POOA – done! My Practice On Own Account application was successful. Now it’s just a case of picking a day and paying for my practising certificate.
Buy new laptop – success! My research paid off as when I saw a fantastic deal in the paper I was able to zip out and pick up my new laptop.
Get finances up to date – funds transferred and old accounts shut down. Balance sheet updated. I now have a much more up to date view of where I’m at.
Run and dance – ran 16km off road race (see the story here) and danced in our Christmas salsa performance (a story is lurking in my mind…)
