Continuing on with the Happiness at Work Telesummit interviews my next review is on Richard Nugent. He is a top coach and trainer to Chief Executives, Olympic Athletes and Hollywood business leaders at Kaizen training. His obsession for helping the influential in business, sport and entertainment to get clear on what is really going on to make the biggest difference and then go beyond that is legendary.
His groundbreaking work on Happy High Performance is the ultimate solution for those clients who want to achieve massive results in their work and life AND have a great time along the way. Authenticity and congruence are at the heart of Richard’s success. Clients who work with him know they will be stretched and supported.
His main points in the interview were:
-
The two biggest lies that organisations tell you are “our customer is our heart and soul” and “our people are our greatest assets”. As soon as times are tough these values go out the window.
-
Your values and those of the organisation must match. If they don’t you won’t be congruent and this will be more damaging to you than it will be to the organization. Your behaviour will become very forced and you won’t be able to maintain authenticity at work.
-
What you measure must be in line with the organisation’s vision and passion. This sounds sensible but its often not done.
-
Watch out for being a perfectionist as it’s not always a good thing. People set themselves up to never be able to meet their own expectations – your goals don’t need to be too stretching. You don’t need to be amazing every day. Have a goal of an average week. As a recovering perfectionist I recently wrote an article “Perfection – Friend or Foe?” that tackles this issue.
-
It’s ironic that goals are what drive people away from happiness the most i.e. if I have that big house, new car, perfect job and relationship then I will get happy. Remember instead that happy is how we are born.
-
It’s important to create momentum – do something right now to get you on the track to happiness. Make a call, buy a book. DO something!
